Netflix’s Echoes, HBO’s House of the Dragon Clash in Nielsen Top 10

The ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series ‘House of the Dragon’ started streaming around a month back on HBO Max and in India on the Disney+ Hotstar OTT platform. The massively mounted series has garnered a lot of critical acclaim and audience appreciation. And now it has made an impressive debut on Nielsen’s top ten streaming titles list.

However, as per the latest Nielsen’s weekly overall top ten streaming chart (for August 22-28 week), another Netflix series is not only ahead of ‘House of the Dragon’ in terms of viewing hours but has also topped the coveted list.

And the show’s name is ‘Echoes’, which raked in more than 1.1 billion minutes of viewing. The Australian mystery thriller revolves around twin sisters Leni and Gina (played by Michelle Monaghan), who have been secretly living each other’s lives for a long time. The plot takes an interesting turn when one of them suddenly goes missing.

While ‘House of the Dragon’ attracted 741 million minutes of viewing for the same viewing window. Having said that, it is noteworthy that only the first episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ was taken into account for its first full week and only a small portion of Episode-2 was considered because of Nielsen’s calculation method.

As per a recent report, the widely admired show ‘House of the Dragon’ registered a whopping overall average of 29 million viewers per episode for the first five episodes across multiple platforms. On the other hand, Nielsen includes viewing stats based on just streaming on television sets in the US.

Other titles on Nielsen’s overall top ten streaming list include the Netflix comedy film ‘Me Time’ (971 million minutes), ‘Game of Thrones’ (909 million minutes), ‘Stranger Things’ (890 million minutes), ‘The Sandman’ (681 million minutes), and ‘The Big Bang Theory’ (606 million minutes), etc.

Coming back to ‘House of the Dragon’, the series is based on George R. R. Martin’s 2018 fantasy novel ‘Fire & Blood’ and the goings-on takes place around two centuries before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ and revolves around the beginning of the end of House Targaryen. Interestingly, the proceedings will witness a major time jump from episode-6 and accordingly the story and the characters will also mark a significant shift from the next week.
